11-18 years

The transition from childhood to adulthood is a critical period for individuals aged 11 to 18. During these formative years, a myriad of physical, emotional, and social changes occur, making it essential to adopt a comprehensive approach to health and wellness. An integrative approach recognises the interconnectedness of various aspects of health and emphasises the importance of nurturing the whole individual. Here, we explore the key components of managing health, wellness, and vitality for adolescents.

Health and wellness requirements from ages of 11 to 18 years encompass various physical, mental, and emotional aspects.

Here are some of the key components of our Integrative Approach:

1. Nutrition

A balanced diet is fundamental for growth and development during adolescence. Emphasising whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, supports physical, gut and brain health and development. Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D with appropriate safe sun exposure for bone health, especially during growth spurts. Understanding the risks of and limiting processed foods, sugars, and modified fats. Educating young individuals about healthy eating habits and the importance of hydration is crucial for their overall vitality.

2. Physical Activity

At least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity, which can include sports, dance, or outdoor activities, most days of the week. Participation in team sports and recreational activities helps to promote fitness and social skills.

3. Mental Health

Awareness and education on mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and social pressures. Encouragement of open communication about feelings and experiences. Access to counselling or support services and peer support groups, when needed. Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation: Integrating mindfulness practices like meditation, yoga, or deep-breathing exercises can help adolescents manage stress and enhance emotional regulation. These practices promote self-awareness and emotional resilience, aiding in the navigation of life’s challenges. Normalising discussions about mental health can help reduce stigma and encourage adolescents to seek help.

4. Sleep

8 to 10 hours of sleep per night to support growth, development, and overall health. Establishing a consistent, healthy sleep habits, such as maintaining a consistent bedtime routine and minimising screen time before bed, can significantly improve sleep quality.

5. Emotional Wellness

Social Connections. Building strong relationships with family, peers, and mentors is essential for emotional well-being. Encouraging participation in extracurricular activities for social development, with involvement in community-based activities, including support and care for the elderly and those with special needs, to help develop social awareness, self-worth and a sense of belonging. Team activities also help develop a sense and appreciation of the importance of rules and regulations.

Self-Expression: Providing opportunities for creative expression, such as art, music, or writing, allows adolescents to explore their emotions and develop a healthy outlet for stress. Encouraging journaling or other forms of self-reflection can also promote emotional clarity.

6. Preventive Healthcare

Regular check-ups with one of our healthcare providers are essential for monitoring physical and mental health and identifying potential issues early. Education on topics such as nutrition, sexual health, and vaccinations is vital during this age.

Holistic Therapies: Incorporating complementary therapies like acupuncture, massage, or mindfulness-based stress reduction can support both physical and mental health. These therapies can be beneficial in promoting relaxation and overall well-being.

7. Hygiene

Emphasis on personal hygiene practices, including regular hand-washing and dental care. Guidance on skin care, especially during puberty.

8. Lifestyle Choices

Substance Use Prevention. Adolescents need guidance on the risks associated with tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. Providing education and resources can empower them to make informed decisions about their health. Encouragement of healthy coping mechanisms and peer pressure resistance skills.

Healthy Coping Mechanisms: Teaching healthy coping strategies, such as problem-solving skills and stress management techniques, equips adolescents to handle the pressures of school, relationships, and personal challenges effectively.

9. Sustainability Awareness
